The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) is set to raise the curtain on Giacomo Puccini’s celebrated opera Tosca with performances taking place on Thursday, 29 January, and Saturday, 31 January, both starting at 7:00pm.
The visually striking production is staged by Davide Livermore and features the Orchestra and Chorus of the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, under the baton of Fabio Mastrangelo.
Set in Rome during a period of political unrest, Tosca unfolds a powerful narrative driven by love, loyalty, and moral conflict. The cast is led by Carmen Giannattasio in the title role of the fiery singer Floria Tosca, alongside Yusif Eyvazov as the idealistic painter Mario Cavaradossi. Ambrogio Maestri appears as Baron Scarpia, whose dark authority propels the opera’s dramatic tension. Together, the performers bring Puccini’s emotionally charged score to life for audiences in Muscat and beyond.
The production also marks an important milestone for ROHM with the debut of its Children’s Choir. The ensemble includes 32 young singers, 16 of whom are Omani, highlighting the opera house’s ongoing commitment to education, artistic development, and community engagement.
In the lead-up to opening night, ROHM’s Education and Outreach Department has expanded the opera experience beyond the stage. A Lunch Music session on 24 January offered audiences a relaxed introduction to live performance, while Opera Talks on 28 January provide deeper insight into Tosca through discussion and shared learning. These initiatives reflect ROHM’s broader role as a cultural and educational centre serving Oman and the wider region.
The collaboration with the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre further reinforces ROHM’s reputation as a venue of international standing, while remaining firmly connected to local and regional audiences.
Umberto Fanni, Director General of the Royal Opera House Muscat, said the production reflects the institution’s core values.
“We are pleased to welcome this production of Tosca to Muscat. It reflects our commitment to artistic excellence while supporting learning, participation, and access for our community. ROHM continues to grow as a place where audiences of all ages can experience the power of live performance,” he said.
With its dramatic storytelling and unforgettable music, Tosca at the Royal Opera House Muscat offers audiences a chance to experience one of opera’s greatest works in a setting dedicated to cultural exchange and artistic growth.
