Graduating Class Saluted by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, BTS & Many More in YouTube ‘Dear Class of 2020’ Event
The star-studded ceremony includes Lizzo, Justin Timberlake, Shawn Mendes, Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish.
For seniors feeling blue about losing an in-person graduation ceremony, allow the healing powers of YouTube to lift you back up. YouTube Originals held the Dear Class of 2020 virtual ceremony yesterday (June 7) with the help of a number of pop stars, celebrities and public figures.
The event began with Lizzo performing the classic graduation walking march, which started traditionally but exploded into a trap beat about halfway through (wouldn’t expect less from Lizzo). Another speaker, Taylor Swift, explained that she too was not able to have a traditional graduation, due to being in the midst of a radio tour “I ended up getting mailed my diploma.”
In addition to speeches, there were plenty musical performances across the ceremony to turn up to, and a few collabs that stood out. Noah Cyrus, Tove Lo, Khalid, Ty Dolla Sign, Camila Cabello and Chris Martin covered U2’s Beautiful Day beautifully. Bono of U2 gave hope to graduates by explaining that the song was not a description of where the band were at when the song was written, it was a prayer for where they could go.
The cast of Schitt’s Creek also did a cover of Mariah Carey’s Hero, and as a surprise for the song’s final chorus, Mariah herself shocked the entire cast when she joined the singalong.
