Justin Bieber Sells Rights to Songs for $200M

Artists are increasingly selling stakes in their work to music funds for a large sum, including the likes of Justin Timberlake and Shakira. What does it exactly mean? It means that every time a song of one of these artist is played in public, even if it’s a small part of the song, the music fund gets paid royalties for it and own the publishing rights for it.

Bieber is one of the best-selling artists of the 21st Century, and Hipgnosis just bought the publishing copyrights to his 290-song back catalogue. It’s worth mentioning that any music he drops in the future will not be included in this catalogue, in fact all music released after December 31, 2021 isn’t included. Hipgnosis has not disclosed the terms of the deal, but word is that it was worth around $200M.
