Officially confirmed. Oman’s first polymer banknote arrives January 11.
The Central Bank of Oman has officially announced the issuance of Oman’s first polymer commemorative one rial banknote, a milestone in the history of Omani currency.
The new note will enter circulation on January 11, 2026, and will circulate alongside the current one rial. It remains legal tender at face value for all transactions.
This is the first time Oman has issued a banknote made from polymer instead of traditional cotton-based paper, offering stronger durability and enhanced security.
The design reflects Oman’s national identity and future-facing projects:
- Oman Botanic Garden, featured on the front and inspiring the transparent window
- Port of Duqm, representing one of the region’s most advanced ports
- Duqm Refinery, a landmark industrial project tied to economic transformation
- Sayyid Tarik bin Taimur Cultural Complex, a national centre for culture, arts, and knowledge
Security features are built into the design and easy to spot:
- A large transparent window inspired by the Oman Botanic Garden
- Colour-shifting foil featuring the frankincense tree
- Colour-changing ink displaying the Central Bank of Oman’s visual identity
- Raised printing that can be felt by touch
For collectors, limited commemorative editions will also be available starting January 11.
Sales locations include:
- Central Bank of Oman exchange counters in Ruwi, Salalah, and Sohar
- A dedicated sales counter operated by Oman Post at Opera Galleria
Collector releases include:
- 1,000 uncut sheets
- 10,000 individual notes in presentation folders
This is not just a new banknote. It is a first of its kind for Oman, and it officially arrives next January.
