Omani Fighter Raises the Sultanate’s Flag in International MMA Competition!

Local martial arts gym, VOMA Global, held an appreciation ceremony yesterday, to commemorate athletes Abdulmajeed Al Balushi, and his twin brother Mahmoud Al Balushi, for representing the Sultanate at the Dubai International Amateur Martial Arts Championship.

27-year-old MMA fighter Abdulmajeed Al Balushi brought home the title, after he secured a third-round unanimous decision victory against a Cameroonian champion.

“My aim was to win. No matter what, I was not leaving that cage with a loss. I didn’t care what happened inside, but I knew that I will leave the cage with my hand, and the Omani flag, raised at the end,” said Abdulmajeed.

Al Balushi said he aims to become a world champion, and represent Oman in the biggest MMA promotions, like Bellator and the UFC.

His twin brother, Mahmood Al Balushi, was also meant to fight at the Dubai International Amateur Martial Arts Championship, but his opponent backed out, which led to a last-minute cancellation.

“At first, I was really disappointed, but I did not let the disappointment affect me, because we have a task. At least one of us is fighting, so I shifted my focus to helping my brother both physically and mentally,” said Mahmood.

The two have been training together for a while, and their coach, BJJ black belt and gold medalist Taoufik Serbout, saw potential in them, which led him to switch from training group MMA classes, to only training the two brothers, with the aim of helping them to compete internationally.

“They have a lot of dedication. They come in every single day. Other people come in at the beginning of the week, and then by the end of the week I don’t see them, but with these two, they always show up, so I stopped training group classes in MMA and I focused only on them. Other people come to the gym only when they are in shape, and there is no benefit in that. You have to come even when you don’t want to, and I saw that with these too. They have this good mentality so I stayed with them.”
