Oman Observer reports on efforts to decrease plastic waste and encourage recycling
Be’ah — the Sultanate’s solid waste management utility — is introducing a reverse vending machine for the collection of plastic bottles. This is an effort to motivate momentum to fledgling recycling initiatives. According to an official of Be’ah, reverse vending machines are among a slate of initiatives being mulled by the state-owned utility. There are drop-off centres for specific types of recyclable waste, and designated bins as well.
Reverse vending machines are hugely popular in several countries around the world, that allow consumers to deposit specific types of recyclable waste. Rewards are typically dispensed in the form of vouchers that can be redeemed against a variety of goods or public travel services.
