Don't be another victim!
Money scammers are sending text messages, social media messages and calling locals and expats in an effort to steal their money. They try to trick their victims into handing over personal details by various means, including pretending to call from a bank, and even pretending their victims have won a grand prize.
In a statement the ROP said, “Ignore all incoming social media calls and messages that claim to be coming from a communication company, a bank or a famous person requesting your personal data and PIN number, while deceiving you by telling you that you’ve won a prize in cash or in kind, or an offering of financial reward.” They have also asked people to report suspicious activity to their hotline, 8007-7444.
“This is not the first time in recent weeks that the ROP has halted scammers from luring people”, the statement said.
Last week, the ROP arrested a gang of 22 people, seizing 60 mobile phones and 70 sim cards that were used by criminals in various telephone related fraud cases. The ROP stated that the accused were of the Asian nationality.
And yesterday, on February 1st, the ROP said they had, “arrested eight Africans, who’d been making counterfeit currency notes. Legal procedures against the accused are under process”
Common sense is key. Never give out your personal details to anyone over the phone or the internet. If you believe you’ve won a prize, research the organization who is claiming to have money for you. Be safe!
