This is the 3rd time that Sheeran has been accused of copying parts of the song, which is the most streamed song in history.
On 22 December 2021, “Shape of You” became Spotify’s first song to hit 3 billion streams, and so its wild to hear that the song that peaked at No. 1 on the singles charts of 34 countries, and is the most streamed song in history is allegedly a rip off a according to two artists?! Chokri and O’Donoghue claim the song’s “Oh I” hook is “strikingly similar” to part of their track Oh Why, which was released by Chokri under the name Sami Switch in 2015, 2 years before Shape of You had dropped.
Ed Sheeran says otherwise and is currently battling it out in High Court. At a previous hearing, the 2 writers’ lawyer labeled Sheeran as “magpie” with regards to his approach to songwriting; “he borrows ideas and throws them into his songs, sometimes he will acknowledge it, but sometimes he won’t.”
Sheeran denied the accusations when taking to the stand yesterday, adding that the accusations would have been found to be false “if Mr. Sutcliffe would have done his research”.
But enough here say, judge for yourself! (skip to 57 seconds into the video.)
