Firefighting teams, Royal Oman Police Aviation and environmental authorities are continuing to respond to mountain wildfire incidents.
Authorities are continuing their response to a wildfire in the Jabal Shams area, with Civil Defence teams, Royal Oman Police Aviation and the Environment Authority all involved in ongoing operations.
The Civil Defence and Ambulance Department in South Al Batinah said it responded to a report of a fire at the top of a mountain in the Wadi Al Sahtan area, as part of a coordinated field response with Police Aviation and other relevant authorities.
The Environment Authority said the wildfire is within the Al Hajar West Starlight Reserve in Jabal Shams.
Specialized teams initially responded to the fire and successfully contained it, extinguishing the remaining hotspots.
Fire Re-Ignited On Monday Evening
According to the Environment Authority, the fire re-ignited on Monday evening at another location and across a wider area.
Royal Oman Police Aviation then began firefighting operations, which remain ongoing, with Environment Authority field teams participating in and monitoring the response.
A preliminary assessment indicated that the likely cause was a lightning strike, with no indications of human involvement.
Environmental Survey To Follow
The Environment Authority said it will continue monitoring the situation and will carry out a comprehensive survey once the fire has been fully extinguished.
The survey will check that no active hotspots remain, assess the environmental impact and determine the measures needed to protect the area and its vegetation.
