Oman and Iran are discussing a proposed temporary joint maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, as the two countries look at practical ways to restore safe navigation through one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
The discussions took place during a visit by Oman’s Foreign Minister to Tehran, where both sides stressed the importance of resuming safe navigation through the Strait in a way that safeguards the sovereignty and sovereign rights of both countries.
The two ministers discussed a phased framework that could provide a practical and implementable solution in light of the current situation in the Strait following recent regional developments.
The proposal includes the creation of a temporary joint maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, alongside an agreement to begin a project aimed at clearing the Strait of mines and other potential hazards.
Technical negotiations between Oman and Iran are expected to continue to reach an agreement on a permanent maritime passage, as well as the operational arrangements needed to manage it.
These discussions will also cover mechanisms for sharing information, managing maritime traffic and providing the necessary navigation and security services.
Both sides also stressed the importance of continuing joint discussions on the wider Gulf region, while calling for adherence to international law and respect for the sovereign rights of coastal states.
